You may hear this chocolate depression cake recipe referred to as chocolate wacky crazy cake or chocolate crazy cake. that doesn’t include any dairy products, eggs, or butter, like chocolate surprise cake. That seems really insane and bizarre, which is rather shocking! Baking soda and vinegar are used to make the cake rise instead of eggs.
The Great melancholy, not “this cake will cure your depression,” is the depression in reference to this chocolate cake. The Great Depression was a period when many of us were low on ingredients, so I thought it would be a good time to share this Chocolate Depression Cake, which goes by many names: Wacky Cake, Crazy Cake, and Chocolate Depression Cake. There are no eggs, milk, or butter used in the making of this one-of-a-kind chocolate cake. Can you believe it? A cake made entirely of vegetable oil? So “wacky,” I’m aware.

Chocolate Depression Cake Recipe Instructions
Spray or butter two 9-inch cake pans lightly and preheat oven to 375º F.
In a large basin, mix together the dry ingredients (flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt). Add the wet ingredients (oil, cider vinegar, coffee, and vanilla extract) and continue whisking.
Add the other ingredients and stir until smooth. Divide the batter equally among prepared cake pans.
After a few minutes in the oven, remove the toothpick from the middle; baking time should be between twenty-four and thirty minutes.
Frosting Recipe
Make the frosting by mixing the powdered sugar, cocoa powder, and salt (if using) in a big basin or mixer while the cake is baking.
Cream the butter with the water, vanilla extract, and softened butter. To adjust the consistency of the frosting, increase the sugar and decrease the water.
Cake must be cooled after removal from oven before icing.
